What Is the Solar System?

  • The Solar System is a giant neighborhood in space where we live.
  • It is made up of the Sun and everything that travels around it.
  • Our home, Earth, is just one small part of this big family in the sky.

The Sun: Our Big Star

  • The Sun is a massive, glowing ball of fire at the very center of our Solar System.
  • It is a star that gives us light and warmth so plants can grow and we can see.
  • Everything in the Solar System stays together because of the Sun's strength.

The Eight Planets

  • There are eight planets that circle around the Sun in a path called an orbit.
  • Some planets are small and rocky like Earth, while others are giant and made of gas.
  • Mercury is the closest to the Sun, and Neptune is the farthest away in the cold dark.

Planet Earth: Our Special Home

  • Earth is the third planet from the Sun and is the only one known to have life.
  • It has plenty of water to drink and air for us to breathe.
  • Earth is often called the "Blue Planet" because so much of it is covered in oceans.

The Moon and the Stars

  • The Moon is Earth's best friend and travels around our planet every night.
  • It does not have its own light; it reflects the light from the Sun like a mirror.
  • At night, we see thousands of other stars that are very far away in space.

Lesson Summary

  • The Solar System consists of the Sun, eight planets, and the Moon.
  • The Sun is the center and provides the energy we need to live.
  • Every planet is unique, but Earth is the most special because it is our home.
