Skip Counting by 2

What Is Skip Counting?

  • Skip counting is a faster way to count a large group of things.
  • Instead of saying every number (1, 2, 3...), we "skip" or jump over some numbers.
  • When we skip count by 2, we say every second number in the line.

How to Skip Count by 2

  • Start at the number 2.
  • Skip the next number (3) and jump to 4.
  • Skip the next number (5) and jump to 6.
  • The pattern looks like this: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20.

Counting in Pairs

  • Skip counting by 2 is exactly like counting things that come in pairs.
  • A pair means two things that go together.
  • Instead of counting each individual item, we count the pairs to find the total quickly.

Real-Life Examples of Counting by 2s

  • Shoes: Since we have two feet, we count shoes by 2s: 2, 4, 6, 8...
  • Eyes: In a group of friends, we can count eyes by 2s to see how many there are.
  • Socks: When we fold laundry, we match socks into pairs and count by 2s.
  • Bicycle Wheels: If there are many bikes, we count their wheels by 2s.

Why Is Skip Counting Useful?

  • It helps us count much faster than counting by 1s.
  • It helps us learn the "Even Numbers" (numbers that can be split into two equal groups).
  • It is the first step toward learning how to do multiplication.

Lesson Summary

  • Skip counting by 2 means jumping over one number every time.
  • We use this to count things that come in pairs or sets of two.
  • The pattern always ends in 2, 4, 6, 8, or 0.
