What Are Hot and Cold?

  • Hot and cold are the words we use to describe how the air or an object feels to us.
  • This feeling is called temperature, which tells us how much heat is present.
  • Our skin helps us sense if something is warm or chilly so we can stay safe.

The Feeling of Heat

  • When something is hot, it has a lot of warmth.
  • Heat can move from one thing to another, making the second thing feel warmer too.
  • The sun is our biggest source of heat, and it keeps our whole planet warm.

The Feeling of Cold

  • When something is cold, it has very little heat.
  • Cold things can make us shiver because they take warmth away from our bodies.
  • Very cold weather can turn water into solid ice or soft snowflakes.

How Temperature Changes

  • Things do not stay the same temperature forever; they can change.
  • If we leave a hot drink on a table, it slowly loses heat and becomes cool.
  • If we stand in the sun, our bodies soak up heat and we start to feel hot.

Safety with Temperature

  • Our bodies like to stay at a "just right" temperature to be healthy.
  • We wear light clothes when it is hot to stay cool.
  • We wear thick sweaters and coats when it is cold to keep our body heat inside.

Lesson Summary

  • Hot and cold describe the level of heat in everything around us.
  • Temperature is how we measure if something is hot, warm, or cold.
  • Understanding hot and cold helps us dress correctly and stay safe from burns or chills.
