What Are Numbers in Words?

  • Numbers in words means writing out the name of a number using letters instead of digits.
  • Just like you have a name (like "Sam" or "Sara"), every number has a name that we can spell out.
  • We use number words when writing stories, filling out checks, or reading books.

The Number Names (1 to 10) These are the most important words to learn because they help build all the other numbers later on.

  • 1 is One
  • 2 is Two
  • 3 is Three
  • 4 is Four
  • 5 is Five
  • 6 is Six
  • 7 is Seven
  • 8 is Eight
  • 9 is Nine
  • 10 is Ten

The "Teens" Family (11 to 19) The teen numbers are special. Most of them end with the sound "teen," which sounds like a bell ringing!

  • 11 is Eleven (A unique name)
  • 12 is Twelve (A unique name)
  • 13 is Thirteen (Notice it starts with "thir" not "three")
  • 14 is Fourteen
  • 15 is Fifteen (Notice it starts with "fif" not "five")
  • 16 is Sixteen
  • 17 is Seventeen
  • 18 is Eighteen
  • 19 is Nineteen

The Counting by Tens (10, 20, 30...) When we reach the big "bundle" numbers, they usually end in the sound "ty."

  • 10 is Ten
  • 20 is Twenty
  • 30 is Thirty
  • 40 is Forty (Be careful! There is no "u" in forty)
  • 50 is Fifty

The Detective Strategy

  1. Say it out loud: First, say the number clearly. For 21, you say "Twenty-one."
  2. Break it apart: If the number is 25, you write the name for 20 (Twenty) and then the name for 5 (five).
  3. Use a Dash: When writing numbers from 21 to 99, we put a small dash between the two words (like Twenty-five).

Why Do We Learn This?

  • It helps us read signs and labels in shops.
  • It helps us write sentences about how many things we see.
  • It makes our brain stronger at connecting symbols (digits) with language (words).

Lesson Summary

  • Digits are the symbols (1, 2, 3), and Words are the names (One, Two, Three).
  • Number names follow a pattern, especially in the "Teen" and "Ty" families.
  • Always check your spelling for tricky words like Eight and Forty.
