What Are More and Less?

  • More and Less are words we use to compare groups of things.
  • They tell us which group has a bigger number and which group has a smaller number.
  • We use our eyes to look at groups and decide which one is larger.

Understanding More

  • More means a larger amount or a bigger number.
  • When we have more of something, the group looks bigger and takes up more space.
  • If you have five candies and your friend has two, you have more candies.

Understanding Less

  • Less means a smaller amount or a lower number.
  • When we have less of something, the group looks smaller.
  • Another word for less is "fewer" when we are counting objects like toys or blocks.

How to Compare Numbers

  • Counting: We can count each item in two groups to see which number is higher.
  • Matching: We can line up items from two groups side-by-side to see which line is longer.
  • Looking: Sometimes, we can see just by looking which group has a lot and which has a little.

More and Less Examples

  • A big bag of popcorn has more than a small bowl of popcorn.
  • A bicycle has less wheels than a car.
  • A sky full of stars has more light than a sky with just one moon.
  • Having two shoes is equal to having one pair of shoes.

Lesson Summary

  • More helps us find the bigger group.
  • Less helps us find the smaller group.
  • Learning more and less is the first step in becoming a math expert.
