What Are Groups?

  • A group is a collection of things that are put together because they are alike.
  • We make groups to help us count faster and keep our things organized.
  • You can have a group of toys, a group of friends, or a group of apples.

What Are Rows?

  • A row is a straight line of objects sitting side-by-side.
  • In a row, things follow each other from left to right or front to back.
  • When we stand in an assembly line, we are standing in a row.

Finding Groups in the Classroom

  • Look at the crayon box; all the crayons are in a group together.
  • Look at the bookshelf; all the books are grouped by their size or color.
  • Putting things in groups makes it easier to find what you need.

Finding Rows Around Us

  • Gardeners plant seeds in long rows so they have room to grow.
  • Buttons on a shirt are usually placed in a straight vertical row.
  • Cars in a parking lot are often lined up in neat rows.

How Groups and Rows Help with Math

  • Counting in Rows: It is easier to count things in a row because we can follow the line with our finger.
  • Counting in Groups: If we have two groups of two, we can quickly see that we have four in total.
  • Sorting: We can take a big pile of shapes and sort them into a group of circles and a group of squares.

Lesson Summary

  • Groups are clusters of things that belong together.
  • Rows are straight lines of things placed side-by-side.
  • Organizing things into groups and rows helps us count, share, and stay tidy.
