What Are 2D Shapes?

  • 2D shapes are flat shapes, like a drawing on a piece of paper.
  • They only have length and width, which means they do not have any thickness.
  • You can see them, but you cannot pick them up like a toy.

Common 2D Shapes

  • Circle: A perfectly round shape with no corners.
  • Square: A shape with four straight sides that are all exactly the same size.
  • Triangle: A shape with three sides and three pointy corners.
  • Rectangle: A shape with four sides where two sides are long and two are short.

What Are 3D Shapes?

  • 3D shapes are solid shapes that you can hold in your hand.
  • They are "fat" instead of "flat" because they have height, width, and depth.
  • These are the shapes we see in the real world every day, like balls and boxes.

Common 3D Shapes

  • Sphere: A solid shape that is round like a ball. It can roll in any direction.
  • Cube: A solid shape like a block. Every side is a square.
  • Cone: A shape that is round at the bottom and has a point at the top, like a party hat.
  • Cylinder: A long shape that is round at the top and bottom, like a soup can or a tube.

Shapes Around Us

  • The clock on the wall is a 2D circle, but the basketball is a 3D sphere.
  • A window is a 2D rectangle, but a brick is a 3D rectangular prism.
  • A piece of paper is a 2D rectangle, but a book is a 3D shape.

Lesson Summary

  • 2D shapes are flat and have no thickness.
  • 3D shapes are solid and take up space.
  • Everything we touch and play with is made of different 3D shapes.
