Where Do Animals Live?

Every animal needs a home to stay safe, keep warm, and raise their babies. An animal’s natural home is called its habitat. Some animals build their own houses, while others find a cozy spot already made by nature!

1. Types of Built Homes Many animals are "master builders" and create their homes from scratch using mud, sticks, or grass.

  • Nests: Birds build nests in trees or on cliffs to keep their eggs safe. Not just birds—squirrels and even some fish build nests!
  • Burrows and Tunnels: Animals like rabbits, moles, and prairie dogs dig deep underground. These holes keep them cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
  • Hives: Bees and wasps work as a team to build complex hives out of wax or paper.
  • Dams: Beavers use logs and mud to block streams, creating a pond where they build their "lodge."

2. Found Homes Some animals prefer to move into a space that is already there.

  • Caves: Large animals like bears may use caves to sleep through the winter (hibernate).
  • Hollow Logs: Small forest animals like raccoons or owls often live inside the holes of old trees.
  • Shells: Some animals, like snails and hermit crabs, carry their homes right on their backs!

Why Do Animals Need Homes?

  1. Protection: To hide from "predators" (animals that want to eat them).
  2. Shelter: To stay dry when it rains or warm when it snows.
  3. Storage: To keep extra food for later.
  4. Family: A safe place for babies to grow up until they can take care of themselves.
